Track 23: Global Health and Pharmaceuticals

Global Health and Pharmaceuticals

Global health and pharmaceuticals are intricately connected in addressing the health challenges that affect populations worldwide. Global health refers to health issues that transcend national borders and require coordinated international efforts for effective solutions. Pharmaceuticals play a crucial role in global health by providing the drugs and treatments necessary to prevent, manage, and cure diseases, particularly in low-resource settings where health systems may be underdeveloped.

Global Health Issues Addressed by Pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceuticals are critical in tackling many pressing global health issues, from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases. Some of the key global health challenges addressed by pharmaceuticals include:

1. Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases remain one of the most significant global health threats, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Pharmaceuticals are essential for the prevention and treatment of many infectious diseases.

·         HIV/AIDS:

    • Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) are used to control the HIV virus, improving life expectancy and quality of life for those living with HIV.
Global efforts like the Global Fund and PEPFAR have expanded access to ARVs in sub-Saharan Africa and other regions heavily impacted by the epidemic.
